Reiner’s Range

This is Spinal Tap (1984) | Misery (1990)

This is Spinal Tap

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) is a mockumentary film directed by Rob Reiner that satirizes the world of heavy metal, following the fictional English band Spinal Tap on their disastrous American tour for their album Smell the Glove. The film, starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, is famous for its biting humor, iconic quotes, and for popularizing the "mockumentary" style, portraying the band's creative tensions, dwindling crowds, and legendary mishaps, like their amps going to 11.

Misery

Misery (1990) is a psychological horror film directed by Rob Reiner, based on Stephen King's novel, about a famous author, Paul Sheldon (James Caan), who is rescued from a car crash by his "number one fan," Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), a former nurse who holds him captive in her remote home and forces him to write a new book to her liking, leading to a terrifying ordeal of abuse and captivity. Kathy Bates won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role, and the film is known for its suspense, dark humor, and iconic performances.
